IQNA – The Islamic Arts Festival opened Saturday at the University of Houston’s Student Center South, drawing visitors to a vibrant display of textiles, calligraphy, and geometric art from the Muslim world.

Hosted by the Islamic Arts Society, a Houston-based nonprofit promoting Islamic art, the festival will continue on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 4455 University Dr. Admission is free.

“This is the 11th year that we're having this festival,” said Shaheen Rahman, board president of the Islamic Arts Society.

“It’s basically meant to bring the broader community together so we can share our Islamic art and culture with everyone,” Houston Chronicle quoted him as saying.

This year marks the first time the University of Houston is hosting the festival, which previously took place at Masjid As-Salam, a mosque and Islamic center in Spring.

According to Rahman, the event has outgrown its previous venue, prompting the move to the larger, centrally located UH campus.

With more than 50 artists from various countries exhibiting their works, the festival also features vendors offering food from Islamic cultures, as well as a comedy show and a film festival.

“We are here this year for the first time at UH because our festival had grown by leaps and bounds, and we needed a bigger space,” Rahman added.

“We decided to bring the festival to the heart of the city, here on the beautiful campus of UH … it’s a great place to connect with the artists who created the artwork.”
