IQNA – At least three women have lost their lives following a stampede at Umayyad Mosque in Damascus on Friday.

According to reports, five children also suffered from fractures, severe injuries, and some left unconscious – according to an initial toll by authorities.

Syrian authorities are reportedly investigating the cause of the incident.

The stampede came about as a result of “severe congestion due to an event organized by civilians,” the While Helmets said.

An Associated Press photographer at the scene said the swell in the numbers of people was caused by a food distribution event after the Friday afternoon prayers.

Massive crowds were also trying to go into the packed mosque for prayers, leading security guards to lock the gates and fire in the air to disperse the crowd, he said.
