IQNA – The spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry stressed the need for preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and preventing it from becoming a terrorist haven.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Esmaeil Baghaei referred to the recent Riyadh meeting on Syria and said, “We will utilize all available resources to ensure Syria does not become a haven for terrorists. The security and territorial sovereignty of this country must be preserved.”

He stressed that regional security and stability should not be compromised, adding, “We have discussed the Astana process, and if the opportunity arises, we will negotiate further about Syria's future. This meeting is about the aftermath, with some countries participating and others not. We welcome any process that helps stabilize the situation in Syria, supports a safe and secure transition, and prevents violations of Syria’s territorial sovereignty.”

He noted, however, that the Riyadh meeting has not resulted in a statement.

As for the election of the president of Lebanon, Baghaei said the Islamic Republic of Iran is pleased with this and congratulates the people and parties of the Arab country.

“We hope this election will help improve the situation in Lebanon and lead to effective steps towards economic recovery and confronting the threats posed by the Zionist regime. Certainly, the relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Lebanon will be good and clear.”

Asked about the absence of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, he said it demonstrates the savage nature of the Israeli regime, adding that the United States should be held accountable for this.

“Some countries have taken the UN Security Council hostage, and this is not desirable at all.”

He added that the countries that support the Zionist regime are accomplices in the regime’s crimes and should be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court.

“Of course, this court is under pressure, but there is a global consensus to confront the Zionist regime’s crimes. We hope that the Security Council will take decisive action.”
