Resistance to Take New Form Following Gaza Ceasefire: Expert

“What has kept Palestine alive for the past 75 years is the faith, belief, and conviction of the Palestinians in continuing resistance to reclaim Palestinian rights; this should be the basis for evaluating the Palestinian resistance,” Mahdi Shakibaei, an expert on West Asia affairs, told IQNA on Saturday.

The remarks come almost a week after the Israeli regime was forced to accept a ceasefire with Palestinian resistance movement Hamas. The ceasefire put an end to 15 months of Israeli war on Gaza, which claimed the lives of more than 47,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, destroyed large swaths of the besieged territory, and displaced almost all of the 2.3 million population.

Despite the devastating war, the regime has failed to achieve its goals, including the elimination of Hamas.

“I believe that contrary to what Israel claims, Palestinian resistance movements have taken on a new form,” Shakibaei noted.

“In the last seven decades, we have seen nothing but resistance from Palestine. If it were otherwise, Palestine would have ended, or it would have been erased by the Zionist regime, and the name Palestine would not be heard at all,” he added.

“The influential factor in the future developments of Palestine remains the faith, belief, and conviction in resistance to reclaim Palestinian rights, which will shape future developments,” he stressed.

Asked about the Donald Trump administration’s policies regarding the Palestinian issue, the expert said, “Without a doubt, Trump will move towards normalizing relations between Israel and Arab countries. He laid the groundwork for the Abraham Accords, but his administration did not last long enough to pursue this matter.”

He described normalization of ties with Israel as the “greatest danger for the Palestinian issue” because this approach tries to “make the Palestinian issue forgotten among Arab countries.”
