IQNA – More than 4.9 million Iftar meals were distributed at the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina during the first week of Ramadan, as worshippers gathered in large numbers for prayers and Umrah.

This is according to a statement by Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques as reported by local media.

Officials noted that Zamzam water consumption reached 8,393 cubic meters, while 1,190 tonnes of waste were collected to maintain hygiene at the religious sites.

The Grand Mosque recorded its highest single-day Umrah attendance, with 500,000 worshippers performing the pilgrimage.

To manage the crowds, authorities designated 196 entry points, including five main gates, and deployed advanced monitoring systems and 200 digital wayfinding screens across mosque courtyards.

Additional services include pedestrian assistance teams, mobile hair-shaving units for pilgrims completing Umrah, and six luggage storage centers.
