In a message sent to IQNA, Sheikh Samih Ahmed Khalid al-Athamina sympathized with the Iranian people and Quranic community over the demise of the scholar.
“I express my condolences to the Iranian nation and the Quranic community of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the passing of our esteemed master Abdolrasoul Abaei, who dedicated his life to the service of the Book of God and the people of the Quran. May God’s mercy, blessings, and grace be upon him,” Sheikh al-Athamina wrote in his message.
“Indeed, we are all from God and to Him we shall return. O Lord, forgive him, grant him Your mercy and forgiveness, and bestow upon him a noble abode, so that he may find peace in the best of homes and the highest paradise. May God grant us all great reward,” he added.
Abaei, one of Iran’s most respected Quranic figures, passed away on April 9, 2025, at the age of 80, following a lifetime dedicated to the service and promotion of the Quran.
Born in 1945 in the holy city of Karbala, Iraq, Abaei was widely recognized for his decades-long contributions to Quranic education, recitation, and international competition.
In 2007, during the 14th National Ceremony Honoring Servants of the Holy Quran in Iran, Abaei was recognized as an outstanding contributor to Quranic activities and was honored in the presence of the then-President.

Abaei began serving as a judge in national and international Quran competitions in 1985, continuing in that role until 2018, when he stepped back due to illness.
Over more than three decades, he held leading roles in some of the world’s most prominent Quranic events, including the international Quran competitions held annually in Iran.
He was particularly known for his repeated participation in Malaysia’s prestigious international Quran competition. As a judge, he represented Iran more than any of his peers, participating in the jury on two occasions and also being invited as a guest by Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM), which organizes the event.
His expertise was also sought in many other countries. Abaei served as head judge and jury member at international Quranic competitions in Indonesia and Syria.
In 1990, he traveled to Malaysia as a mentor for Karim Mansouri, who was representing Iran in that year’s international Quran competition. Under Abaei’s guidance, Mansouri secured second place.
In addition to judging, Abaei played a significant role in training and mentoring future generations of Quranic reciters and scholars.
Funeral and memorial arrangements have yet to be announced. Quranic institutions and cultural figures across Iran are expected to honor his memory in the coming days.
