In a statement issued Tuesday, CAIR—the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States—said Rep. Fine has consistently used “Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian stereotypes” while promoting “violence against Muslims and Palestinians at home and abroad without impunity.”
The designation comes after a series of public comments by the Florida lawmaker, including a controversial appearance on national television in May 2025, during which he suggested that the United States should consider using nuclear weapons against Gaza, drawing a parallel with the atomic bombings of Japan during World War II. When asked to clarify, Fine reiterated his stance with remarks CAIR described as racist and dehumanizing.
According to the group, he claimed that "half of Gaza’s population is married to their cousins and has mental defects" and dismissed criticism of his language by saying, “you’ve got to have a mental defect to interpret the comment that way.”

Despite the severity of these statements, CAIR noted that Rep. Fine has not faced censure or public rebuke from Republican leadership. The organization renewed its call for Congress to formally censure Fine following further comments last week in which he again referred to Palestinians as having "mental defects."
In April, CAIR distributed a letter to all members of the U.S. House of Representatives and more than 1,600 congressional staff members, urging lawmakers to take a stand against what it characterized as “dangerously anti-Muslim, anti-American, and anti-Palestinian rhetoric” from Rep. Fine.
The group highlighted several past incidents involving the congressman, including his social media posts calling for Gaza to be “destroyed,” referring to a colleague as a “Muslim terrorist,” and mocking a photo of a deceased Palestinian child. He has also told a Muslim constituent to “go blow yourself up” and described the Palestinian keffiyeh scarf as a “terrorist rag” during a public hearing.

CAIR is calling on House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to issue a formal condemnation, strip Rep. Fine of his committee assignments, and encourage all members of Congress to reject cooperation with him. The organization pledged to continue working with civil rights advocates and elected officials to hold Fine accountable.
