IQNA – A 66-year-old man has appeared in court following multiple incidents involving rodents being released outside a mosque in Sheffield.

Edmund Fowler, a resident of Grimesthorpe, Sheffield, has been formally charged with four counts of racially or religiously aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress.

The charges stem from a series of events near the Grand Mosque on Grimesthorpe Road.

According to South Yorkshire Police, the incidents took place on 3 May, 26 May, 7 June, and 23 June. Authorities said that individuals attending the mosque were “targeted” during each occurrence.

On the most recent date, CCTV footage reportedly captured a man removing a container from a car and releasing rats onto the pavement near the mosque.

Fowler appeared before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Friday. During the hearing, he indicated that he would plead guilty to the offences.

He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to the same court on 16 July for sentencing.

South Yorkshire Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case.
