The first edition of the Zayen al-Aswat nationwide Quran competition is set to take place in Qom today and tomorrow (October 1-2) in three main categories under the slogan “Quran, the Book of the Faithful”.
Mohammad Reza Pourmoin, the executive director of this edition, told IQNA, “The mere holding of Quran competitions and the diversity we witness in them shows the dynamism and vitality of the (Iranian) Quranic community. And the fact that the first edition is expected to be received with great enthusiasm is proof of the fact that we still need to create events in this field, and specifically Quranic competitions.”
He continued, “In creating a new wave in the field of Quranic activities, we must always look for new ideas and opinions, and these events must be designed and implemented in a way that complements (existing) Quranic competitions.”
The veteran Quran expert further stated, “It seems that Zayen al-Aswat is going to repeat the path of other Quranic events and competitions, and (also) seeks to fill the gaps and neglected issues that we have witnessed in the field of Quranic competitions so far.
“Among the neglected issues that this competition seeks to address is the effective communication and follow-up that the organizing committee and its secretariat establish with the contestants, especially the winners, after the end of each competition. What we often see is that the closing ceremony and the celebration of the winners are not followed (by further activities). Apart from a few cases that are dependent on the organizers of the competitions or that successes are achieved through the individual actions of a selected Quran reciter, memorizer, or activist, the policy-making and executive structure of the competitions have no commitment to the continuation of the successes of the participants and the winners of that event.”
He emphasized that Zayen al-Aswat seeks to realize this and complete the cycle of training, identifying the talents of young and adolescent reciters, and introducing them to professional and international Quranic communities.
“Perhaps the question comes to mind that other structures were previously designed and launched with such an approach and vision, but subsequently failed to achieve their goals due to the lack of provision of some components, including financial credits. Therefore, it would be better that a collection of Quranic institutions and organizations join forces and pool their expert and technical capabilities to create a strong and unified movement in the field of Quranic activities, including holding Quranic competitions.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, Pourmoin referred to the presence of the best and most experienced Quranic scholars and veterans in the Zayen al-Aswat Composition’s technical and judging committee, and said, “This, along with all the structural and content features of this field, demonstrates the importance of the role of these competitions in identifying and cultivating new talents in the field of Quranic recitation, which will definitely continue along the way and with the development and consolidation of these talents, all matters of policy-making and implementation will be delegated to them.”
