IQNA – A translation of the Holy Quran in Betawi will soon be released in Indonesia, according to the country’s religious affairs ministry.

A translation of the Holy Quran in the Betawi language will soon be released in Indonesia.

Betawi, also known as Batavian, Jakartanese, Betawi Malay, Batavian Malay, or Jakarta Malay, is the spoken language of the Betawi people in and around Jakarta.

The translation process started in 2024 and is now entering the stage of validation, the ministry said.

“The translation of the Betawi language Quran is a bridge between the holy text and the people's life experiences, and is a tangible manifestation of inclusive religious literacy,” said Head of the Center for Assessment of Religious Books, Lectures, and Religious Literacy (PBAL2K) Sidik Sisdiyanto in Jakarta, last week.

Sidik explained that PBAL2K discussed validation to ensure the validity of the translation according to the Quranic sciences rules and the character of the Betawi language.

According to him, the purpose of translating the Quran into regional languages is to bring the community closer to the Holy Book so that it is easy to understand and practice in everyday life.

The Betawi translation of the Quran is expected to be an opportunity for the younger generation of Betawi to get to know the Quran better and at the same time enrich the archipelago's Islamic treasures.

“The validation process that we are doing today is to ensure every word, expression, and meaning really reflects the divine message while respecting the wealth of the Betawi language,” said Sidik.

The ministry noted that until now it has translated the Quran into about 30 regional languages, and 10 of them have been digitized.
