IQNA – At 21 years old, Iranian Quran memoriser Nazanin Hasannezhad describes how thorough repetition of verses deepened her understanding and eased her anxiety.

‘Repetition Embeds the Meaning’, says Young Quran Memorizer

Hailing from Khorasan Razavi province, Hasannezhad — a participant in the 48th edition of the 48th National Holy Quran Competition — emphasises that a successful hafiz (someone who has memorised the entire Quran) must advance through three methods: visual, auditory and conceptual.

Speaking to IQNA, she explained that while memorising a verse she might recite it hundreds or even a thousand times, and that this repetition helps “the meaning become embedded in the mind.”

The competition, organised by the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization of Iran, is recognised as one of the country’s largest Quranic events, with separate tracks for men and women, and categories including memorisation, recitation and Tarteel (melodic recitation).

Hasannezhad entered the “hifz of the whole Quran over-18” category. She began recitation around age ten, and started continuous memorisation at age twelve.

She managed to memorise the entire Quran in one year while also attending school. Her daily schedule reached ten hours a day, stretching from 1pm to midnight. She combined her school study sessions with times between Quran verses.

She says memorising the Quran has had positive effects on her academic performance and reduced her anxiety. In one school exam she was very anxious, but after reciting a verse she felt calmer and realised the text’s real impact.

Hasannezhad credits her family environment — especially her mother, who was her first tutor — with being vital to her progress. She says: “If the family wants to raise a Quran-child but the supportive environment is not there, this cannot happen.” She considers pooling the three memorisation methods as the best path.

Reflecting on her successes, she says the competition wins include fourth nationally last year.

She urges young people to engage in Quran memorisation, describing it as the best guide and model from which they can draw.
