By studying the story of these people, we can recognize different types of sins.
La’an (cursing) means pushing away from mercy. It is mixed with anger and rage.
The fact is that God’s mercy is comprehensive and all-inclusive: “My Mercy embraces all things.” (Verse 156 of Surah Al-A’araf)
However, some people make the wrong choice and go astray, reaching a point where they are like a ball in the ocean of divine mercy which no water can enter.
Those have been cursed in the Quran include unbelievers, polytheists, obstinate Jews, apostates, deceitful law-breakers, those who break promises, those who conceal the truth, hypocrites, those who harassed the Holy Prophet (PBUH), oppressors, murderers, Iblis (Satan), those accusing chaste women, opponents of true leaders of Islamic society, liars, and those who spread fake rumors.

In Islamic Hadiths, too, some people have been cursed, including:
Those who distorted divine books.
Those who do not accept what God has decreed.
Those who insult the Household of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
Those who seize the share of fighters on the path of God.
Those who tell people to do good but don't do good themselves, or who tell others not to do bad while they do it themselves.
