Story of Prophet Idris (AS)

That is why it is important to know the birthplace of prominent figures like divine prophets. One of God’s messengers was Idris (AS).

God says in Verses 56-57 of Surah Maryam: “And mention Idris in the Book; surely he was a truthful man, a prophet, We granted him a high position.”

Idris (AS) is a prophet who has been praised and his character has been mentioned in four verses of the Holy Book.

As for the birthplace of Idris, there are two main views:

1- He was born in Babylon. It was one of most famous cities in the ancient times. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Babylon from the early second millennium to the early first millennium BC. It was in the south of Mesopotamia in today’s Iraq.

Those who say Babylon was the birthplace of Idris (AS) say he left the city for Egypt after the people of Babylon rejected his invitation to the path of God.

2- He was born in the city of Memphis or Men-nefer, which was the ancient capital of Inebu-hedj, the first nome of Lower Egypt.

The prophethood of Idris (AS) coincided with the reign of an evil and oppressive king who killed a believer to seize his land. God appointed Idris to the prophethood to go to this king and tell him that God was angry with him for killing the believer and intended to send punishment.

The king ignored Idris’ warning and threatened to kill him. So Idris left the city and took refuge in a cave inside a mountain. God tasked an angel to take food to Idris every evening.

Then God’s punishment came and the oppressive king was killed and his city was destroyed.
