The process was undertaken by a specialized team from the King Abdulaziz Complex for Holy Kaaba Kiswa, which includes 159 craftsmen.

The replacement began with the removal of the old Kiswa and the installation of the new one, fixing it at the corners and atop the Kaaba.

The new Kiswa, a 1,350-kilogram fabric standing 14 meters tall, was raised and secured over the old covering in a systematic procedure repeated for each of the four sides and the door curtain, Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.

The Kiswa is crafted from about 1,000 kilograms of raw silk, 120 kilograms of gold threads, and 100 kilograms of silver threads.

Historically, the Kiswa was changed annually during the Hajj pilgrimage, specifically on the ninth or tenth day of Dhu Al Hijja. However, a royal decree issued in 2022 shifted this tradition to the first day of Muharram.

Pieces of the retired Kiswa are cut and distributed to select individuals and organizations, symbolizing honor and blessings.
