The opening ceremony was held in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, with the participation of Mauritanian and Saudi officials.
Mauritania’s Minister of Islamic Affairs Sidi Yahya Ould Sheikhna emphasized during his speech that the Quran and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) are the foundations of true Islam.
He highlighted that this Quranic event is a result of the cooperation between Mauritania and Saudi Arabia, particularly in the field of Quranic sciences and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
He further explained that the competition aims to strengthen the connection of youth with the Quran and Sunnah, encouraging them to benefit from the enlightening and guiding teachings of these sacred texts.
Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Raqabi, Saudi Ambassador to Nouakchott, also spoke at the ceremony, noting that efforts were made to ensure the competition meets the highest standards of fairness and transparency.
He added, "Choosing Mauritania to host this major international event is a testament to the deep-rooted and brotherly relations between the people of Saudi Arabia and Mauritania."
This competition is organized by the Mauritanian Ministry of Islamic Affairs, with the support and supervision of Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance.

The event features 136 participants from 16 countries who will compete in two main categories: Quran memorization and the memorization of the Prophet's Hadiths.
Five judges will assess the competitors in the Quran category, while another panel of five experts specializing in Hadith will evaluate the participants in the Sunnah section.
The Quran memorization competition is divided into four categories: complete memorization of the Quran with the seven styles of recitation, along with Tajweed and the interpretation of the last 10 Juzes of the Quran; complete memorization of the Quran with Tajweed and interpretation of the last 10 Juzes; memorization of 20 consecutive Juzes of the Quran with Tajweed; and memorization of 10 Juzes of the Quran with Tajweed.
In the Sunnah section, participants compete in memorizing the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from selected books and sources.
The activities of contest will continue until tomorrow (October 17), with the closing ceremony and awards presentation scheduled for Saturday (October 19).
