IQNA – Copies of the Holy Quran were reportedly burned in six residential halls at Rajshahi University (RU) on Saturday night.

In response to the incident, students organized a human chain protest on Paris Road within the university at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the university administration has established a nine-member investigation committee to look into the matter. The committee, chaired by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Md. Farid Uddin Khan, was confirmed by Public Relations Administrator Professor Dr. Md. Akhter Hossain Mazumder, The Financial Express reported on Sunday.

The individuals responsible for the act have yet to be identified, according to university officials.

Shihab Uddin, a resident of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, recounted that after completing the Fajr prayer in the hall's mosque, he discovered damaged copies of the Quran. "As usual, while reciting the Quran, we saw that the first two surahs and the last two surahs of two Qurans had been burned and placed on the bookshelf," he said.

Earlier on Sunday, during an emergency press briefing held in the university's Senate building, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqib confirmed the incidents. He stated, "So far, incidents of burning the Holy Quran have occurred in four halls. Whoever is involved in this incident, if identified, will face the maximum punishment."
