Quran Memorization, Recitation Contest Launched in Mauritania’s Capital

IQNA – A competition on memorization and recitation of the Holy Quran began in the capital of Mauritania on Sunday.

The national Quranic event has been organized by the Mauritania Radio, according to al-Siraj website.

The Grand Mosque in Nouakchott is hosting the competition, which is being held for both men and women.  

A total of 1,950 qaris and Quran memorizers are competing in the two sections for men and women.

Islamic Affairs Minister Sidi Yahya Ould Cheikhna Ould Lemrabet and Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication, and Relations Al-Hussein Ould Medou were present at the opening ceremony yesterday.

In an address, the Islamic affairs minister highlighted the importance of this competition in encouraging positive rivalry among young people and honoring the month of Ramadan as the month of the Quran.

Lemrabet expressed gratitude to the organizers of the contest.

“I have closely observed the competition categories and the level of participants. Transparency is a hallmark of this contest, maintained from registration to the announcement of final results,” he stated.

Mohammad Abdul Qadir Ould, the director of Mauritania Radio was another speaker at the ceremony.

He said the increase in the number of participants is the most significant feature of this year’s Quran competition, with the number rising from 1,300 to 1,950.
