The Sheikh al-Qurra Quran Award, named after Sheikh Sidi Abdullah al-Tanwajiwi, has been organized in the category of Quran memorization and recitation.

A total of 361 memorizers and reciters took part in the preliminary round and 30 of those having the best performance made it to the finals.

Three top contenders in the competition will be named as winners and awarded at the closing ceremony.

An official with the Jasour Society, which has organized the contest, said it is aimed at encouraging Quran memorizers and reciters.

This competition is a unique cultural initiative that keeps alive the memory of Sheikh al-Qurra of the Takarur region (a part of southern Mauritania), as many Quranic activities in this area are attributed to him, the official added.
