IQNA – In war-torn Gaza, three Palestinian sisters have completed memorizing the entire Quran despite enduring Israeli bombardment, forced displacement, and severe hunger.

Three Gaza Sisters Memorize Entire Quran Amid War, Starvation, Displacement

Hala (20), Alma (17), and Sama (15) al-Masri from Khan Younis achieved this milestone under the supervision of their elder sister, Nada al-Masri (22), who herself completed memorization in 2023 and now teaches the Quran.

“I feel as if I own the whole world. This success is first by the grace of Almighty God, and then thanks to my daughter Nada, who oversaw her sisters’ work until the end,” their father, Kamel Mohammed al-Masri, told Al Jazeera Mubasher.

The girls followed a strict daily schedule set by Nada in January 2024, never postponing a task to the next day. This discipline continued even after the family was displaced twice — from Khan Younis to Rafah in December, and then to al-Mawasi, where they lived in a simple tent.

Hala said that they faced displacement, hunger, shelling, and extreme heat in the tent but encouraged each other to persevere.

“I feel proud that, God willing, I will place the crown of honor on my parents’ heads on the Day of Judgment,” she said.

Sama added that the war never broke their determination. “We had school, a mosque, and a beautiful life. Then war came and destroyed everything. But with determination and persistence, we were able to memorize the Quran,” she said.

Alma described the journey as the hardest of her life. Before the war, they memorized the Quran in mosques; now it was done in tents. “In winter it was freezing, in summer unbearably hot. But now we have four memorizers in one home, and it’s an indescribable feeling,” she said.

Their achievement comes amid Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza, which began in October 2023 and has killed at least 61,430 Palestinians and injured more than 153,213.

The occupation regime cut off all aid to Gaza on March 2, falsely accusing Hamas of diverting supplies, effectively using food as a weapon against 2.2 million civilians.

Severe restrictions have pushed the enclave into a deepening famine, with nearly 217 people—including 100 children—dying of malnutrition in recent months.
