IQNA – Leicester City Council has approved plans to convert a disused former rugby clubhouse in Aylestone into a mosque.

Leicester Council Approves Plan to Convert Former Rugby Clubhouse into Mosque

The council’s planning committee granted permission on Wednesday to redevelop the pavilion on Knighton Lane East, previously occupied by Old Aylestonians Rugby Football Club but unused for about eight years.

During the meeting, some residents raised concerns about traffic and road safety once the site reopens. However, council highways officers said the proposed parking arrangements were sufficient and the overall plan acceptable.

Applicant Louay Al-Alousi, who is set to serve as the mosque’s imam, said traffic would be managed and many attendees were expected to walk or cycle to prayers. He added that the mosque, which will include educational spaces, would accommodate up to 100 people at a time and could open by February 2026.

The council received 163 letters of support for the application and 38 objections. Some objections cited potential noise disturbances.

A report submitted to the committee noted there was “no intention” to broadcast an amplified call to prayer outside the building.

It also recommended restrictions preventing outdoor events and limiting opening hours between 07:00 and 23:00, with an extension to 00:30 during Ramadan.
