TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Quranic delegation from the Islamic Republic of Iran has traveled to Malaysia as the Southeast Asian country’s international Quran competition continues.

The delegation, headed by Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry’s Quran and Etrat Deputy Ali Reza Moaf, were present at the venue of the competition, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC), on Friday, the third night of the international event.

The programs of the third night began with playing a number of religious songs in Malay followed by recitations from eight contenders in two groups of four.

Those who went on to the stage on Friday were the representatives of Algeria, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Egypt as the first group, and the contenders from the Netherlands, Iraq, Brunei, and Canada.

Each contestant had between 10 to 14 minutes to offer his or her performance.

During the interval between the performances of the two groups, different religious songs in Malay, including a Tawasheeh performance in praise of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), were played.

According to IQNA’s correspondent in Kuala Lumpur, with three nights to go before the winners are announced at the closing ceremony, the Quran reciters from Iran, Afghanistan and Indonesia have had the best performance so far and are among the favorites to win the top title.

A panel of arbiters comprised of experts from eight countries including Malaysia, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Indonesia assess the performance of the participating qaris.

One of the features of this year’s edition is that organizers are using modern technologies to offer translation and interpretation of recited verses to the audience at the hall.

The contest is set to wrap up on October 25 when the top winners will be announced.

The 62nd edition of Malaysia’s international Holy Quran competition, officially known as Malaysia International Al-Quran Recital and Memorization Assembly (MTHQA) was held online in the preliminary stage. The finals ae being held in person, after more than two years of hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to officials, 41 individuals from 31 countries are participating in the final round in two categories of men and women.
