In a solemn visit on Friday evening, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres met with the Islamic Republic of Iran's delegation at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The visit was to honor the memory of the late President Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and others who lost their lives in a recent helicopter accident.
Guterres penned a heartfelt tribute in the memorial guest book, acknowledging the profound loss.
The UN chief also held a brief yet warm encounter with Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN.
Guterres conveyed his deep condolences and solidarity with the families of the deceased, the Iranian government, and its people.
A helicopter carrying President Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian, Friday prayers leader of Tabriz Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Al-e-Hashem, Governor of East Azarbaijan Malek Rahmati, the commander of the president’s security team, two pilots, and a flight crew crashed in the northwestern province of East Azarbaijan on May 19, 2024. Their bodies were found on Monday after an extensive night-long search operation.
Iran observed five days of national mourning this week, with funeral processions for the victims held in multiple cities.
President Raisi was laid to rest at Imam Reza (AS) shrine in Mashhad, and Amir-Abdollahian was buried at the holy mausoleum of Hazrat Abdul Azim Hassani (AS) in Rey, south of Tehran, marking the end of days of funeral processions attended by millions of Iranians in several cities.
