Visually-Impaired Memorizer Says Quran Gave Him ‘Inner Peace’

Alireza Khodabakhsh, a Quran memorizer from Sabzevar in Iran’s Razavi Khorasan Province, has shared his aspirations and journey as a finalist in the 47th National Quran Competition.

Speaking to IQNA on the sidelines of the event in Tabriz, Khodabakhsh emphasized that his main objective is to promote Quranic teachings.

“This is my first time participating in this competition, and I hope to be a messenger of the divine word, especially in the area of Quran memorization,” he stated.

Khodabakhsh, who memorized the Quran through listening and the use of Braille Quran scripts, began his journey during his high school years.

Reflecting on the Quran's impact, he remarked, “The most significant influence of the Quran in my life has been achieving inner peace and spiritual reassurance.”

Encouraged by family members and a relative involved in Quranic activities, Khodabakhsh credits his success in academics, including university entrance exams, to his Quranic endeavors. “The support I received enabled me to excel in both my studies and my spiritual journey,” he said.

Khodabakhsh holds a bachelor’s degree in Arabic Literature from the University of Tehran.

He completed the full memorization of the Quran over two years, beginning in 2016.

Alongside memorization, he enhanced his recitation skills by listening to the recordings of renowned qari Sheikh Muhammad Siddiq Al-Minshawi and studying various maqamat (melodic modes), including Nahawand.

“The blessings of the Quran in my life are countless,” he noted, adding that spiritual growth, divine satisfaction, and earning the approval of Ahl al-Bayt (AS) are among the greatest rewards he has received through his Quranic efforts.

Khodabakhsh highlighted the challenges faced by Quran memorizers and reciters, particularly the lack of adequate institutional support.

“Unfortunately, officials believe their duty toward promoting the Quran ends with holding competitions and providing minimal rewards,” he lamented.

The 47th National Quran Competition, underway in Tabriz, is one of Iran’s most prestigious Quranic events.
