IQNA – The Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism praised the swift action of Iranian authorities to sack two of the IRIB’s executives for insulting the sanctities of Sunni Muslims.

In a post on Facebook, the Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism described the move as a positive step that indicates the authorities’ opposition to offensive remarks and their efforts to prevent issues that create discord among Muslims.

It noted that Al-Azhar chief Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, in a recent international Islamic-Islamic Dialogue conference in Bahrain, had called for preventing any insults to Islamic sanctities.

The Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism concluded by stressing the need to respect the sanctities of all Islamic faiths, to prioritize prudence and to avoid anything that might lead to division and discord.

Iranian authorities have dismissed several officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) and filed lawsuits against eight employees for insulting Sunni Muslim sanctities in a live TV program aired earlier this week.

The IRIB, in a statement, underscored the significance of Islamic unity and said it strongly condemns any divisive actions and calls for serious intervention and investigation by security agencies to identify the roots and main perpetrators of this incident.
