Kosovo’s Special Prosecution filed an indictment on Tuesday against a suspect accused of inciting division after desecrating the Muslim holy book.

In a statement to the media, the prosecution identified the suspect only by the initials I.P. and stated that he tore up the Quran in early March this year near the “Saraçhane” tekke in the southern city of Prizren.

“Investigations revealed that I.P. tore and scattered pages of the Muslim holy book, the Quran, on the ground, causing outrage among the Islamic community and threatening coexistence between groups with different religious ideologies,” the statement said.

He is formally charged with inciting division and intolerance under Article 141, paragraph 1 of Kosovo’s Criminal Code.

The offense of inciting division and intolerance is punishable by a fine and imprisonment of up to five years, according to the Penal Code.

However, prosecutors have requested the court to order mandatory psychiatric treatment for the suspect while at liberty.

They argued for this measure because “his ability to judge and control his actions at the time of the offense was significantly impaired.”
