Some 15,000 Quran reciters and memorizers took part in the competition, al-Ittihad daily reported.
The contenders were students of Quran memorization centers and institutes affiliated to the Awqaf department.
Some 1,200 contestants were honored at the closing ceremony, which was addressed by the head of the department.
In his speech, Omar Habtour al-Dar’ei hailed the younger generation’s interest in learning the book of God.
The Quran is a teacher, guide and protector from vice and a savior, he said, adding that memorizers of the Quran are the ones selected and honored by God.

The Quran contest is annually organized in different categories by the Awqaf department.
This year, the number of the categories grew from five to ten.
